According to court testimony, witnesses saw Thomas Sparks, Jr., 34; shoot Ed Toefield in front of a Hi-Ho restaurant on Highway 51 outside Amite. Toefield had just put handcuffs on Spark’s left wrist when Sparks pulled a pistol from the front of his trousers and shot his arresting officer.

Holden Grinch’s death still troubles family

Back in October, we investigated a potentially tall-tale retold regularly by my great-grandfather, William Oliver “Paw Bill” Courtney, and—amazingly—we found the story of the tarred-and-feathered Hammond dentist to be 100% accurate. This month, I wanted to look into Paw Bill’s story about a Livingston Parish “Grinch” who stole Christmas presents, had a change of heart, and then returned them all before morning. Checking the archives of the Associated Press and United Press International, unfortunately, I did not find the story confirmation I had hoped more, but I did uncover evidence that this would-be Grinch’s death remains an unsolved mystery after 30 years....
